Gary’s Thursday Thoughts (9/14/17)

Gary’s thoughts from the week so far.  Grab your WCE shirts for the season here.

This weekly Thursday post is exactly what it says it is: my thoughts on stories that have popped up through the week.

The best thing about this piece is that there’s no set number of topics I have to cover, and I can talk about anything that is entertaining, regardless of whether or not it is sports-related (although I’ll always attempt to keep it limited to the realm of sports).

There are tons of stories out there that I could write individual articles on, but I’m not interested in writing an entire post on things that have already been well covered by other media outlets.

If there is a topic that is not being covered adequately, then I’ll research it and write about it.  But for this weekly post, I’ll give my opinion on what I think is interesting, and we’ll go from there.

Since Chris & I started this website, people have been asking for advice. Usually, it’s what team to bet on this week. ‘You got Patriots or Steelers?’ ‘Chicago or Detroit?’ Let me tell you this. Where you’re betting is just as important as who you’re betting on. That’s why I always tell people to go to MyBookie.ag. Right now, you can use promo code WCE100 for a 100% deposit bonus.

They have the fastest payouts – seriously, just two business days – and that 100% deposit bonus is epic.  That means whatever you deposit, they’ll match it completely.  It’s no different from betting in a glitzy Las Vegas casino, but you can do it right from your smartphone. Trust me, go to MyBookie.ag to place your bets, and tell them we sent you by using promo code WCE100 to get that 100% deposit bonus.  Right off the bat, you’re making money for doing nothing. Get over there, and get the best odds anywhere!

1. Baker Mayfield had the best ever back-and-forth with Ohio St fans

Baker Mayfield owns The Horseshoe.

It’s pretty simple, at this point.  After his performance on the field against Ohio St, and his attempted planting of the flag on the Ohio St turf, I was already a big fan.

But this exchange, per Ian Fitzsimmons, is the stuff legends are made of.

Another notable Mayfield-related story surfaced this week when ESPN Radio personality Ian Fitzsimmons gave a hilarious recollection of an extended back-and-forth between Ohio State fans and Baker Mayfield during the second half of Saturday night’s W (go to the 23-minute mark).

Behind the Oklahoma bench, there were a group of Buckeye fans that were beyond over-served. I mean these dudes were lubed up. And right at halftime, right as Baker Mayfield’s getting treatment on his lower back, he comes out and these guys are just wearing him out. He finally — right before their first possession when Ohio State goes up 10-3 to start the second half and you’re going “uh-oh” — turns around and goes, “Get ready, I’m about to hand six on you bleeping bleepers”. He leads them right down the field, the score’s tied at 10. He goes straight to the bench, stands up on the bench, and just lets the Buckeye fans behind him that were giving it to Baker… he turns at them and says, “You like that one? I’ve got three or four more of those coming up. Get ready”. – Ian Fitzsimmons on Freddie & Fitz

Seriously, could this guy have gotten any more popular after one game?

2. Florida is trying to fix the offense… but there’s still problems.

Florida Press BoxArticle: gridironnow.com/florida-oc-doug-nussmeier-move-press-box-tennessee-game/

The SEC finally announced that the Florida / Tennessee game will be played in Gainesville, as scheduled, this Saturday.

Jim McElwain announced that offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is moving from the field to the press box for this week.

This just stinks of desperation.  They’ve played one game against a stout defense, and started a first time starter in a neutral site monster national game.  I don’t know that it’s time to press the panic button just yet.

With that said, this offense does look awful, and with the news that there’s no update on when the 9 suspended players will be back, including wide receiver Antonio Callaway and running back Jordan Scarlett (the two returning all-stars on this team’s offense), they’re going to continue looking awful.  It’s tough to win in the SEC unless you have players.  And if your best ones are on the sidelines in street clothes, you’ll be exposed.

I’m not sure how Florida is favored in this game.  Let’s you know exactly what people think of Butch Jones.

3. Ohio St offensive stats in their last 3 big games are amazing

Urban MeyerArticle: sports.yahoo.com/opposing-coaches-whats-wrong-ohio-state-offense-not-qb-221518967.html

This is just incredible for anybody.  Even more so for a team with an experienced QB and one of the legendary offensive minds in the sport.

Per Yahoo’s Pete Thamel:

In the regulation periods of Ohio State’s past three games against marquee opponents – Michigan, Clemson and Oklahoma – the Buckeyes have what can be considered 34 full offensive possessions. Over that time, Ohio State can claim just one sustained touchdown drive – a seven-play, 44-yard drive against Oklahoma on Saturday night. The Buckeyes have punted 17 times, committed eight turnovers (counting downs) and kicked eight field goals (four makes and four misses).

What?  Is this real life?

Urban Meyer offenses have converted touchdowns on less than 3% of their possessions against Michigan, Clemson, and Oklahoma.

That’s putrid.  Read the rest of Thamel’s article – other coaches don’t believe it’s JT Barrett’s problem.  They think it’s something wrong with the offense.  I think I agree with them.  Barrett doesn’t look comfortable.  Hell, nobody on that team looks like they’re gelling.  They hit some big plays against an undermanned Indiana team, but they’re going to run up against some big dogs later this season.  Something is wrong, and it’s the coach’s job to make sure your experienced, senior QB (who has been really good in the past), is comfortable with the playbook, along with the rest of the guys on that offense.

4. Minnesota’s new helmets are scary as hell

Article: footballscoop.com/news/minnesota-wearing-alternate-helmets-saturday/

Minnesota’s helmets are normally pretty standard.  A gold M, or a gold helmet with an M on it.

Traditional, even if Minnesota is not a traditional power.

But this weekend… obviously in honor of the Stephen King novel’s movie “IT” coming out in theaters last week, they’re unleashing the Goldy the Gopher helmets for the home game against Middle Tennessee State.

I don’t know if there’s a more terrifying helmet in all of college football.  Creepy doesn’t even begin to describe it.

I will admit though… I’m looking forward to watching this game just to see what it looks like.

Gary began his first website in 1998 as a sophomore in high school, writing reviews of cds and live shows in the Memphis area. He became editor of his college newspaper, then moved towards a career in music. He started the infamous MemphisTider.com blog during the 2006 football season, and was lucky enough to get into blogging just before the coaching search that landed Nick Saban at Alabama. The month and a half long coaching search netted his site, which was known for tracking airplanes, over 1 million hits in less than 90 days. The website introduced Gary to tons of new friends, including Nico and Todd, who had just started the site RollBamaRoll.com.After diving into more than just Alabama news, Gary started up his first installment of WinningCuresEverything.com in 2012. After keeping the site quiet for a while, it was started back up in April 2016. Gary then joined forces with high school friend Chris Giannini and began a podcast during the 2016 football season that runs at least 2 times a week, focusing on college football, NFL football, and sports wagering, and diving into other sports and pop-culture topics.E-mail: gary@winningcureseverything.com Twitter: @GaryWCE
