Biggest Games of the Weekend
Oklahoma @ Ohio St
Saturday, Sept 9th / 6:30pm CT / ABC / Columbus, OH
Oklahoma is heading to Columbus, OH looking for revenge after last season’s Buckeye beatdown of the Sooners in Norman. Bob Stoops is gone. Lincoln Riley is now in the head chair for OU. Ohio St hired in former Indiana coach Kevin Wilson as their OC.
Last week, Oklahoma was easily the more impressive team, but they were playing at home against UTEP… maybe one of the worst teams in the country. Ohio St played at Indiana, and looked pedestrian until they hit some big plays and ended up covering the line, and winning by 28.
College Gameday will be in attendance. Barstool Sports will be in attendance. Baker Mayfield and JT Barrett will be on opposing sidelines. I think the Ohio St defense shows up. Chris thinks Oklahoma’s offense is legit. It should be fun.
Auburn @ Clemson
Saturday, Sept 9th / 6:00pm CT / ESPN / Clemson, SC
Death Valley at night. Not the best place to be for opposing teams.
Auburn played Clemson incredibly close last year, and this year, Auburn believes they have their guy. To me, last week Stidham looked kinda pedestrian, but that could have been on purpose. There was no reason to do anything crazy with him, as they beat Georgia Southern 41-7.
Clemson looked overwhelming, and just as good as last year, in their 56-3 win over Kent St. I think Clemson wins this game at home, but Chris leans the other way. He thinks Auburn is for real this year.
Georgia @ Notre Dame
Saturday, Sept 9th / 6:30pm CT / NBC / South Bend, IN
Notre Dame looked great against Temple last week. But Georgia looked great against App St.
The big storyline is Georgia losing Jacob Eason… but I don’t believe that necessarily hurts them in this spot.
I think Georgia has the better players, and I’m not buying into this season’s Notre Dame hype just yet. Regardless, a night game in South Bend should make things interesting.
Stanford @ USC
Saturday, Sept 9th / 7:30pm CT / FOX / Los Angeles, CA
Stanford has absolutely dominated USC, winning 7 of the last 9. And the 2 games they lost were by a field goal.
I think Clay Helton is a great coach… but I think David Shaw has been in these spots more regularly. I’m going to roll with Stanford – the team that I feel has the better line play on both sides of the ball, especially after watching Western Michigan run for 260+ yards on USC last week. Sam Darnold can’t beat you if he’s not on the field.
Other Interesting Games
Memphis @ UCF (Friday, Sept 8th / 5:30pm CT / ESPNNews / Orlando, FL)
- They moved this game up to Friday from Saturday to try and get it in before prep for Hurricane Irma. With that, UCF is not allowing any tailgating before the game. What kind of impact will the threat of a hurricane have on this game? Memphis lost a lot of defensive players last week, and if I had to gamble, I’d bet UCF ends up winning their division in the AAC this year over South Florida. Everything points towards a UCF win… but games that look one way can sometimes go another.
TCU @ Arkansas (Saturday, Sept 9th / 2:30pm CT / CBS / Fayetteville, AR)
Florida Atlantic @ Wisconsin (Saturday, Sept 9th / 11:00am CT / BTN / Madison, WI)
Utah @ BYU (Saturday, Sept 9th / 9:15pm CT / ESPN2 / Provo, UT)
South Carolina @ Missouri (Saturday, Sept 9th / 6:00pm CT / ESPN2 / Columbia, MO)
Pitt @ Penn St (Saturday, Sept 9th / 2:30pm CT / ABC / Los Angeles, CA)
Nebraska @ Oregon (Saturday, Sept 9th / 3:30pm CT / FOX / Atlanta, GA)

College Football
UT San Antonio (+17) @ Baylor (Saturday, Sept 9th / 7:00pm CT / FSNSW / Waco, TX)
- UT San Antonio has the 2nd most experienced team in College Football coming back, and Baylor just got beat at home by Liberty last week. Yes, that really happened. UTSA hasn’t played a game yet because Houston had to cancel their matchup last week due to flooding from Hurricane Harvey. Look for UTSA to be fired up to get out there this week. I don’t know that they’ll win, but I know Frank Wilson is a great coach, and he’ll be able to keep this game close.
South Carolina (+2.5) @ Missouri (Saturday, Sept 9th / 6:00pm CT / ESPN2 / Columbia, MO)
- South Carolina has the better players, the better defense, and I think SC’s Jake Bentley is every bit of Drew Lock’s equal, if not better than he is. Barry Odom is supposed to be a defensive coach, but his team has shown nothing since he got to town a year ago. I think Will Muschamp finally has a good qb in his 6th year as a head coach (2nd as SC), and he’ll show that he’s not as awful a coach as people have made him out to be. I think South Carolina wins this game outright.
Georgia (+4.5) @ Notre Dame (Saturday, Sept 9th / 6:30pm CT / NBC / South Bend, IN)
- Georgia has the better players, and I believe losing Jacob Eason and having to start Jacob Fromm is a blessing in disguise. It’s pretty simple, really. I’m not buying into the Notre Dame hype just yet, but the fact that this game is at night in South Bend could make it very interesting. I still like Georgia to win outright.
Stanford (+6.5) @ USC (Saturday, Sept 9th / 7:30pm CT / FOX / Los Angeles)
- Stanford has physically dominated USC for years. I don’t think that changes here, especially after watching USC get sliced up for 260+ rushing yards by Western Michigan last week. I love Stanford coming in under the radar here. I’m going to play the +6.5, but I’m going to hit that money line a little bit as well.
MTSU @ Syracuse (-9.5) (Saturday, Sept 9th / 2:30pm CT / ACC Network / Syracuse, NY)
- Syracuse has their offense absolutely rolling under Dino Babers now. MTSU is better than they looked at home against Vandy last week (lost 28-6), and Syracuse’s defense won’t be able to do what the Commodores did, but they’ll slow the Raiders down enough to cover 9.5.
NFL
Eagles @ Redskins (+1) (Sunday, Sept 3rd / 12:00pm CT / FOX / Landover, MD)
- Are the Eagles significantly improved over last season? Part of me thinks they might be, but the other part of me thinks it doesn’t matter. Kirk Cousins at home as a dog in the opening game? And he’s got Pryor to throw to now? I’m all over the Redskins as a home dog.
Colts @ Rams (-3.5) (Sunday, Sept 3rd / 3:05pm CT / CBS / Los Angeles, CA)
- The Rams have a new, offensive-minded, head coach, but I’m looking at their defense, with new DC Wade Phillips, who I think is one of the best DCs in the NFL. He may not have a lot to work with, but he’s not working against much either, as the Colts are garbage, especially without Andrew Luck in the backfield. I think the Rams give LA something to cheer for on Sunday and cover that 3.5.
Cardinals @ Lions (+1.5) (Sunday, Sept 3rd / 12:00pm CT / FOX / Detroit, MI)
- I like the Cardinals a lot this year, but I don’t like them going on the road in week 1 against Matt Stafford. I like home dogs in week 1, and I think the Lions are gearing up for another playoff run, even if they don’t get there. I’m curious to see what Carson Palmer does, but I think Stafford has the weapons to win this game outright.
