Slow start to the season, as I (Gary) took 3 losses compared to only 2 for Chris. Here’s what happened in my picks:
Ohio St (-20.5) 49 @ Indiana 21 WIN
Ohio St started off slow, and was actually down 21-20 late in the 3rd quarter, and then the talent gap showed, and Ohio St hit on 4 big time touchdowns in the last 19 minutes of the game. Indiana hung around for a while, but the the level of player for Ohio St was just too much for the Hoosiers to overcome.
Colorado St (+5) 3 vs Colorado 17 LOSS
Colorado St had multiple touchdowns called back during this game, and the officiating was absolutely atrocious. Mike Bobo, CSU’s coach, almost lost his mind, but you gotta give Colorado credit. Their defense, although aided by multiple penalties, held up against a dynamic offense and stuffed them. They only scored 17 points, but that was all they needed for a 2 TD victory.
Navy (-10) 42 @ Florida Atlantic 19 WIN
Navy’s game was never really in doubt. Florida Atlantic was never going to compete with Navy in this first game, and it showed early. The game went through 3 lightning delays, and didn’t get finished until sometime after 2am local time, but Navy did what they needed in order to cover this line.
Wyoming 3 (+11.5) @ Iowa 24 LOSS
Wyoming goofed up every way that you could think of in Iowa City. Their punter completely missed the ball on a punt, and Iowa scored on a touchdown pass on the next play. The Cowboys committed penalties, and turned the football over in prime spots. Iowa was much more poised. I thought it would be considerably closer, but it looks like Iowa is going to be pretty good this season.
Appalachian St 10 (+14.5) @ Georgia 31 LOSS
Early on, after 3 punts by the Jacob Eason-led Bulldogs, I thought I might have been on the money with this one. App St wasn’t able to do anything with the football, but once Eason went out with an injury, I assumed immediately that we had this thing in the bag. Boy, was I wrong. Georgia’s freshman phenom, Jake Fromm, led the Dawgs to a 31-0 lead, and the only reason App St was able to score in the 4th quarter is because Georgia took out all the starters, and the 3rd string quarterback threw the ball to the Mountaineers 2 straight times.
