The Tuesday Trifecta: Aug 23, 2016

Good morning and welcome in!  As I said in the last write-up, I’m planning on doing 3 of these per week.  It appears it may be a Tues-Wed-Fri format, with Chris filling in some other days and us throwing in the podcasts at least a couple of times a week.  Today’s will be the Tuesday Trifecta.  Basically, we’re gonna fill this website up with a lot of information to keep you entertained, so spread the word and share the site on your social media profiles!

There’s a few things that have gotten my attention over the last few days so we’ll dive right in:

1. Connor McGregor should now defend his title at 145 lbs… after his injury suspension

McGregor and Diaz both started talking about completing the trilogy immediately after McGregor’s win at UFC 202 on Saturday night.  McGregor said he wants to fight Diaz, but this time at 155, and Diaz just wants a third opportunity.  And I can’t blame them – when the salary figures were announced, I knew they would want another one as soon as possible.

McGregor took home $3M for the fight, with no win bonus, and Diaz took home $2M.  Not to mention what they’re going to pull in from the PPV numbers, which, from what we can tell, blew the previous record, their first fight at UFC 196 at 1.9M PPV buys, out of the water.  They easily surpassed 2 million PPVs at an average of $50 per buy, and they negotiated a really large portion of that to come back to them.

But there is such a thing as fatigue on a fight like this.  When there were trilogies in boxing, there were always other fights in between.  For instance, Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield fought 3 times, but took 2 fights before the rematch, and then took 4 fights over 2 years before the 3rd.

After going up 25 lbs and scoring a victory like that, McGregor needs to defend his title at 145 before he decides to do anything else, unless he wants to just give up the belt, which is something he’s obviously not interested in doing.

He’s claimed that he wants to be the title holder for 3 divisions at one time, to prove he’s the best, but to do that, he needs to go back and defend against Aldo first.  Then, rather than another Diaz fight, I’d go with the 155 lbs lightweight championship fight with Eddie Alvarez.  Get that 2nd belt before you go at Diaz again.  Let Diaz show he can do something in his own division before another fight.

Now, all of this has been put on hold thanks to Nevada imposing a 6-month injury suspension on McGregor because of how bad he messed up his shin and foot the other night against Diaz.  Which makes his victory look that much better.  So, according to this, it’ll be at least Oct 5th before he can even start training again.  So his next fight is going to be in January or February… against Aldo.

2. Mark Sanchez may not even make the Broncos roster

Mark Sanchez now has 3 turnovers in 2 quarters of play for the Broncos.  Trevor Siemian, a 7th round pick from a year ago (and the only qb that has experience in Kubiak’s offense), is starting the 3rd preseason game this week, and Paxton Lynch has, honestly, played better than both of the veterans in his first 2 games of action.  So with the battle basically coming down to Lynch and Siemian, reports are out that Sanchez, with how much it cost to bring him in this year, would not even make the roster, because there’s no sense in paying him his contract to sit on the bench.

So what’s the next step for Sanchez?  The Broncos can attempt to trade him, but who is going to trade for a guy that couldn’t beat out a rookie and a 2nd year 7th round pick?

It’s sad to see a guy that had so much promise, that was just not developed at all under Rex Ryan in New York, stuck in a situation where he cannot take advantage of opportunities like this.  He was brought in to be the starter for the defending Super Bowl champions.  Not only can he not separate himself from the other quarterbacks, he’s fallen to the 3rd spot.  I’m personally wanting Lynch to win the job because of my Memphis bias, but I hope Sanchez picks himself up and figures out how to cure these turnover problems.

3. Tim Tebow is holding a baseball workout in LA

Tebow’s workout will be on Wed, Aug 30th in Los Angeles.  Of course LA is where you want to hold something when you want it to be low-key and under the radar, right?  I’m convinced that he’s already got an offer to join a team if he performs well, which is why he’s holding this.  It’s a private workout to showcase for as many teams as would like to attend – and so far 20 teams out of 30 are interested.

I don’t believe for a second that this kid only wants to play.  He wants the fame that goes with it.  It’s why, when given the opportunity to be traded to Jacksonville and have a shot at starting, or going to the Jets and possibly having to play tight end, he chose New York.  Tebow loves the spotlight.  He wants the eyeballs and he wants to continue building his brand.

Of course, I’d imagine he’s gotta be pretty good, or else he wouldn’t be doing this, so I would imagine we’ll see him playing for the Tampa Bay Rays by the end of this season.  If for nothing other than selling more tickets and jerseys.  Do you know how many people would actually watch this?  There’s a ton of people that would tune in.  And people would flock to Tampa Bay games for a little while just to get a glimpse of Tebow.  And the jersey sales.  Good gracious.

He became editor of his college newspaper, then moved towards a career in music. He started the infamous MemphisTider.com blog during the 2006 football season, and was lucky enough to get into blogging just before the coaching search that landed Nick Saban at Alabama. The month and a half long coaching search netted his site, which was known for tracking airplanes, over 1 million hits in less than 90 days. The website introduced Gary to tons of new friends, including Nico and Todd, who had just started the site RollBamaRoll.com.After diving into more than just Alabama news, Gary started up his first installment of WinningCuresEverything.com in 2012. After keeping the site quiet for a while, it was started back up in April 2016.
