The New York Times bought the Athletic, the sports writing subscription startup, for $550M on Thursday. The Athletic doesn’t have a lot of the things you would normally include in a subscription based business, but they did gather 1.2M subscribers in the last few years, which made them appealing to the NYT, who has a goal of reaching 10M subscribers in the next few years. So why was the deal made?
