The Friday Five: 10/28/16 Texas A&M boob selfies, Memphis football video game fights, etc

Fridays are always filled with news, but I’m kinda gathering a “best-of” from the week to put together the Friday Five this week.

Tons going on today with me – I’m at work currently, but right outside of my office, they’re setting up for the Bluff City Bash, which is the University of Memphis homecoming concert.  This year features T.I. and K Camp (no idea who that is).  Last year’s was Ludacris and B.O.B.  Pretty awesome setup that the school does for students.

Campus has been bananas all week, prepping everybody for the Memphis / Tulsa game on Saturday night.  It’s a lot different from years past.  Justin Fuente really turned around this football program, and it just proves that when you’ve got a team that’s winning, everything else around the university picks up.  Memphis enrollment is up substantially, and people are more involved around campus.  It’s pretty insane to see the difference up close.

On to the Friday Five.

1. Memphis fb players fought over video game…

…and the player that won the fight had his car shot up outside his apartment not long after.  Read the story here: www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/football/2016/10/27/memphis-teammates-oglesby-prewitt-fought-over-video-games/92833942/

Yes, this actually happened.  Jae’Lon Oglesby and Kam Prewitt got into an altercation.  Basically, Prewitt, who was already suspended from the team, took a video game from Oglesby, Oglesby called him out on it, Prewitt challenged him to a fight, Oglesby beat his ass sometime between 9 and 9:30pm, and then Oglesby’s car got was shot several times outside of his apartment around 10pm.

Now, it’s not proven that Prewitt had anything to do with the shooting… but you can put pieces together the same way I can.

Sometimes stories just write themselves.  Good lord.

2. Texas A&M coed drinks wine, takes boob selfie, and crashes into police car

Miranda Kay Rader was driving around Wednesday night around 8:30pm and crashed into a parked patrol car.

When the officer approached her, her bra was unfastened and she was trying to put her shirt back on.  She told the officer she was trying to send a Snapchat picture to her boyfriend.

Oh yeah, and she had an open bottle of wine in the seat next to her.

This is probably the most SEC thing that has happened all football season.  I mean, really, how amazing is this?

Now, let’s talk about a couple of different things.  First off, you can see the flower tattoo on her chest in the picture.  Looks like it might be a little faded, but you can tell she’s fun just by looking at that.

Next, she’s probably crazy.  Like, she sends nudes to her boyfriend with death threats sprinkled in over dumb things like him not responding to a text, or looking at other girls, etc.

So what was most to blame for the crash?  Was it the drinking?  Or was it trying to take the picture?  Either way, how in the world do you not see a parked police car?

Let this be a lesson, ladies.  Keep sending nudes… men appreciate them.  But make sure you park somewhere before you do it.  And for the love of God, don’t drink and drive.

3. The Big 12 will not have divisions

Big 12 will not have divisions in 2017. Will match top 2 teams in conference title game

— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) October 28, 2016

I’m on record as saying that I believe we should do away with divisions in all conferences, and some years, do away with the championship games.  Or at least set it up to where there are stipulations that must be met – if the SEC West obviously has the 2 best teams, then they should play, rather than a 3 loss SEC East Champ.  Same thing should happen this year if Clemson and Louisville continue to run the table, because those are obviously the 2 best teams, as opposed to one of them having to play a 3 loss North Carolina, Miami, or Virginia Tech.

But, on the other hand, if championship games must exist (because it’s basically just a money grab anyway), and conferences continue to expand, then I get it.  Most of the national media seems to be completely opposed to having a guaranteed rematch in the Big 12 Championship game.

I cannot wait for the Big 12’s panic when two teams meet two weeks in a row, they split and the second game costs it a playoff spot.

Now, if the first matchup ends up being a close game between two top 10 teams, then they’d be fine with that.  Like the 2014 TCU / Baylor game, where both teams ended up with 1 loss and neither got into the playoff (supposedly because of their lack of quality wins, which a conf championship game would have helped alleviate)… the media would have LOVED to have seen that game played again.

But it will get a little weird in a season where Oklahoma and Oklahoma St end up finishing 1 and 2, and then both end up in the Big 12 Championship game the week after Bedlam.  Doesn’t exactly seem fair, but, hey, it’s what they’re calling for.

I don’t know of any real way for them to even have divisions.  They have all already agreed to play 9 conference games, which means they play a round robin anyway.  What would they do… 5 team divisions?  And then you only play 8 conference games, so you only miss out on one team?  You’re gonna end up with a rematch about 90% of the time anyway.

So cheers to the Big 12 for the cash grab and the added “quality win” on the schedule… and hey, if it costs you a playoff appearance every now and then, hell, you probably weren’t getting in anyway.

4. Pac12 schedulers screwed Cal

The Pac12 scheduled games basically thinking Cal wasn’t going to be worth a damn.  Or at least that they wouldn’t complain about things because they probably were not going to beat USC anyway.

But Sonny Dykes definitely did complain.  And loudly.

“We looked like a tired, beat-up football team. I think it’s a travesty whoever scheduled this game. I hope the Pac-12 doesn’t do that again to any other school. It’s not right for the kids.
“Everybody talks about student-athlete welfare, but they need to put their money where their mouth is.”

He does have a point.  Cal played late Friday night last week in a tough overtime game against Oregon.  And then had to travel to USC this week, or a short week, while USC last played on Oct 15th at home.

I understand schedule making is difficult, but putting teams at such a competitive disadvantage is ridiculous, and the Pac12 should be ashamed.  They need to figure out how to fix this next year.

5. Wrigleyville bars are already slammed

Chicago is amped up for this World Series.  Cleveland is no slouch, but it will be difficult to overcome so much momentum for the Cubs.  Can you imagine what the party will be like if the Cubs win the series in Game 5?  I personally think it goes at least 6, if not 7, but the party is going to insane one way or another.

He became editor of his college newspaper, then moved towards a career in music. He started the infamous MemphisTider.com blog during the 2006 football season, and was lucky enough to get into blogging just before the coaching search that landed Nick Saban at Alabama. The month and a half long coaching search netted his site, which was known for tracking airplanes, over 1 million hits in less than 90 days. The website introduced Gary to tons of new friends, including Nico and Todd, who had just started the site RollBamaRoll.com.After diving into more than just Alabama news, Gary started up his first installment of WinningCuresEverything.com in 2012. After keeping the site quiet for a while, it was started back up in April 2016.
